BEEF

Heartland Meats, Inc

Heartland Meats is family owned and operated cattle operation, as well as a century-old grain farm in rural Mendota, Illinois. The owner's great grandfather, John Sondgeroth, established the farm in 1903. His grandfather, Charles, and father Robert, continued to build and improve the farm over the years. John and Pat Sondgeroth have been farming since 1978 and have been operating the family farm since 1987. In order to diversify the 21st century farm, Heartland Meats has chosen to raise and process a specialty beef called Piedmontese.

The Piedmontese cattle breed emerged from Piedmont, Italy, the alpine region which is a secluded pocket, naturally protected by the Alps. Two breeds of cattle, Aurochs and Zebu, through natural selection, have evolved over the centuries to become the Piedmontese breed - Italy’s number one beef breed. In the early 1980’s the first Piedmontese were introduced to North America. Because of America’s desire to lower its total fat content in their diets, the Piedmontese Beef has been an increasingly popular option for many. The combination of naturally lean meat with a tender texture and remarkable flavor in many ways far out-paces competing breeds.

Heartland Meats sells its beef directly to you, fresh frozen. To do this, they own a federally inspected processing plant south of Mendota, where they process only their beef. It is done under U.S.D.A. inspections, which means there is a federal inspector inspecting the plant daily. Heartland Meats products carry a federal label stating that the meat is "All Natural" and "Raised Without the Use of Added Hormones."

Heartland Meats are also available at select markets in the Illinois and Wisconsin areas as well as by ordering on line at www.heartlandmeats.com

CHICKEN

Springer Mountain Farms®

For Springer Mountain Farms, being an American Humane Certified producer has been good for its chickens, its business and its customers.

In 1999, Springer Mountain Farms became the world’s first poultry producer to become American Humane Certified. The decision to apply for certification was a logical outgrowth of the company’s concern for the humane treatment of farm animals, as well as its philosophy about healthy practices to ensure a quality product.

All of the chicken products sold under the Springer Mountain Farms label are American Humane Certified. Approximately 100 farms -- mostly small, family-owned operations within a 35-mile radius of Baldwin, Ga. -- provide chickens for the Springer Mountain Farms brand. And every single one of them has met the American Humane Certified animal welfare standards.

Springer Mountain Farms feeds its chickens an all-vegetarian diet, which is one of the two major factors that loyal customers attribute the delicious taste of the chicken. The other factor is the lower-stress environment associated with following the American Humane Certified standards.

Springer Mountain Farms’ products can be found in stores across the eastern half of the United States.

DAIRY

Clover Stornetta

In 2000, Clover Stornetta Farms became the first dairy in the U.S. to be awarded the American Humane Certified label for humanely produced dairy products. Certification of humane practices precipitated significant changes for Clover Stornetta’s producers and for the cows. Several new barns were built so the cows would have room to come in out of the weather. Recognizing the social nature of cows, Clover producers allowed the cows to congregate, rather than live in separate pens. Tails are no longer docked, and in some cases bedding is changed three times a day. These management practices have further improved milk quality, and generated consumer appreciation and loyalty.

With their strong emphasis on quality, Clover Stornetta introduced its North Coast Excellence program in 1995, with full third party certification in 1999. North Coast Excellence Certified guarantees that all of the milk bottled at the plant is from only the top milk producers in the North Coast region and comes from cows not treated with rBST (Bovine Growth Hormone). The milk is extensively tested at each stage of production in our on-site lab.

Clover Stornetta products can be found in select stores and restaurants in California, Nevada and Arizona.

Kleinpeter Farms

Family owned since 1913, Kleinpeter Farms provides dairy products without using recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) or recombinant Bovine Somatotrophin (rBST), Kleinpeter manages a herd of more than 700 cows on a 1,500 acre farm in Montpelier, La. The company was the recipient of the 2007 Louisiana Wildlife Federation Conservation Award for developing a model of cooperation between the business of agriculture and conservation of the environment. Kleinpeter provides environmentally sensitive housing for its cows and produces much of the forage the cows feed on. The farm’s state-of-the art facility incorporates the latest in dairy science, agriculture and conservation practices.

Kleinpeter’s milk and dairy products can be found in the Baton Rouge area.

Jeff Kleinpeter talks about the American Humane Certified program:

‘When the American Humane Association performs their annual audit of us, they don’t merely do a “walk through” and look at our records, and “take our word” for things, they really look at the animals and examine them…they look at our records in our computer systems…they look at how we raise our calves, and they look at all of this very skeptically.

They want to see us succeed, but they know we can’t succeed if we don’t treat our cows right, and with the highest dignity.

We scored a perfect score on our last random inspection from AHA. I was very proud of this. We are the only dairy in the history of AHA that has ever scored a perfect score on an inspection…in the history of AHA!!”

Loleta Cheese Company

Loleta Cheese Company is a small cheese factory located in Loleta, Calif., a farming community situated along the state’s scenic northern coast. Founded in 1982 by Bob and Carol Laffranchi, the company uses traditional recipes and techniques to create a variety of cheddar, jack, havarti and other cheeses. Each vat of cheese is worked by hand, which allows the natural goodness of the milk to come through.
This Old World approach is just part of the story behind Loleta’s success. Another major factor is how humanely the company treats its cows. In 1998 the Laffranchis added a dairy farm to their operation and started producing their own milk. The company’s herd of over 900 cows, regularly graze in the tall grasses and rich clover on Loleta’s land. Loleta ensures that its cows are warm and dry in the winter by preparing indoor accommodations with a thick layer of wood shavings and tree bark.

Loleta cheeses are marketed throughout the coastal areas of Northern California and are available at the factory store in Loleta or online at http://www.loletacheese.com/. Loleta cheeses are also available through Pacific Cheese Co. in Hayward, Calif., and Sage Marketing in Sonoma, Calif.

Red Barn Family Farms

Four family dairy farms in Wisconsin make up the Red Barn Family Farms brand, which was founded in 2007. Its founder, Terry Homan, started Red Barn after working for 12 years as a veterinarian in rural Wisconsin. He believes that there should be transparency in how milk on store shelves is produced -- from the feed to the sale.

Red Barn selected each of the farms in their “family” for its ability to meet strict standards, called “The Red Barn Rules.” The rules ensure that every cow demonstrates excellence in health and quality of milk. Each farm must also pass an inspection by American Humane Certified. This ensure consumers that the cows are treated humanely and that the milk is produced without using the genetically engineered bovine growth hormone rBST.
The quality and taste of the milk is the result of the production style of the family farms from which it comes. The Red Barn Family Farms line of milk products is bottled at Lamers Dairy, a small, family-owned bottling plant in Appleton, Wis.

The Red Barn products -- skim (nonfat) milk, 2% reduced-fat milk and whole milk -- are available in Milwaukee.

Rumiano Cheese Company

American Humane Certification is a natural fit for Rumiano Cheese Company’s organic line of cheeses. For more than 85 years, the Rumiano family has placed as much importance on treating its cows humanely as producing its signature products. Located along the scenic Northern California coast in Crescent City, the company receives its milk from independent, third- and fourth-generation dairy farmers whose untethered Jersey cows graze year-round in the mild region’s lush pastures. Rumiano ensures that these cows never receive artificial hormones. In addition, the company has given cleanliness and quality bonuses to suppliers since the 1970s, rewarding those who produce the highest-quality milk.

Rumiano Cheese Company was founded in 1921 by three brothers whose legacy of quality and commitment to humane practices has been passed down through multiple generations. The company currently manufactures a wide range of cheeses, from dry Monterey jack and pepper jack to different types of cheddar. All of the dairy farms that supply milk for the company’s organic cheeses are American Humane Certified.

Rumiano Cheese Company distributes its products under the Rumiano name as well as other labels, such as California Premium and Landmark. Rumiano distributes its cheeses both domestically and internationally. Consumers can find Rumiano’s cheeses in Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s, Albertson’s, Safeway, Raley’s, Sherms, Ray’s Food Place and Costco stores.
