Our Values

GOOD FOR FARM ANIMALS:

For little cost, food producers can follow animal welfare standards of practice which ensure that farm animals are:

  • Free to live and grow in a humane environment under conditions and care that limit stress.

  • Free to enjoy a healthy life, benefiting from injury and disease prevention and rapid diagnoses and treatment.

  • Free to readily access fresh water and a diet that maintains full health and vigor.

  • Free to express normal behaviors and live in an appropriate and comfortable environment that includes sufficient space, proper facilities, shelter, a resting area, and company of the animals' own kind.

GOOD FOR YOUR FAMILY:

Recognizing your concerns about your food and the welfare of the animals, the American Humane Certified program provides you the choice to purchase and request food that supports the efforts of producers who have made raising and treating farm animals with The Humane Touch a top priority.

Before a product can feature the American Humane Certified label, the respective producer must follow up to 200 checkpoints on the care and handling of each farm animal species. The result is a proven process that gives you the comfort of knowing that, by selecting these designated products, you are ensuring that even more animals will benefit from the science-based standards that result in more humane treatment.

In addition, the program helps your voice be heard in the marketplace, encouraging additional retailers and producers to support your preference for humanely raised products. Learn three specific ways you can get involved through the program, by clicking here.

GOOD FOR PRODUCERS AND RETAILERS:

Humane treatment of farm animals is not only the right thing to do, it’s also the right way for forward-thinking producers, retailers and restaurants to show today’s consumers that they recognize what’s important in food choices.

The public demand is significant. In fact, a 2007 survey conducted for American Humane Certified by the independent Public Opinion Strategies organization found that 58% of consumers said they would spend an additional 10% or more for meat, poultry, eggs or dairy products labeled as humanely raised. The same group of consumers also ranked the humane label as more important than labels specifying “organic” or “natural."

As the humane handling and treatment of farm animals becomes even more relevant to our society, the importance of the pioneering efforts of the American Humane Certified farm animal program will only increase.
